How to Shuvit: A Guide to This Essential Skateboarding Trick

What Is a Shuvit?

A shuvit is a skateboarding trick where the board spins 180 degrees beneath your feet without flipping. Unlike the pop shuvit, the shuvit doesn’t involve popping the tail of the board off the ground, making it a simpler and more approachable trick for beginners. It’s also the foundation for more advanced variations, such as the pop shuvit and 360 shuvit.

Step 1: Setting Up

Gear Check

Ensure your skateboard is in good condition. A durable deck, quality grip tape, and well-maintained trucks make a big difference.

Location

Choose a flat, smooth surface like a skatepark or driveway. Avoid rough or uneven terrain, as it can make the trick harder to learn.

Step 2: Foot Placement

  • Back Foot: Place your back foot on the tail of the board, with your toes hanging slightly off the edge. This positioning helps you scoop the board for the spin.
  • Front Foot: Keep your front foot near the middle of the board, angled slightly forward. This foot helps stabilize the board and control the spin.

Step 3: Executing the Shuvit

  1. Start in Stance: Begin in a relaxed stance, with knees slightly bent and shoulders aligned with the board.
  2. Scoop the Board: Use your back foot to scoop the tail of the board in a backward motion, initiating the 180-degree spin.
  3. Lift Your Front Foot: As the board begins to spin, lift your front foot off the deck to allow it to rotate freely.
  4. Stay Centered: Keep your weight centered over the board to maintain balance and control.
  5. Catch and Land: Once the board completes its spin, place your front foot back on the board, followed by your back foot. Bend your knees to absorb the impact and roll away smoothly.

Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting

Learning the shuvit takes time and practice. Here are some common challenges and how to address them:

  • The Board Doesn’t Spin: Ensure you’re scooping the tail with enough force and using a smooth, controlled motion.
  • The Board Flips: If the board flips, check your foot placement. Avoid kicking down on the tail and focus on a horizontal scoop.
  • Unstable Landings: Keep your eyes on the board and focus on staying centered to improve landing consistency.

Tips for Mastering the Shuvit

  • Practice Daily: Spend a few minutes each day practicing the shuvit. Repetition is key to building muscle memory.
  • Film Yourself: Record your attempts to identify areas for improvement. Compare your technique with tutorials or experienced skaters.
  • Get Feedback: Ask fellow skaters for advice and watch them perform the trick to gain new insights.
  • Stay Patient: Progress takes time. Celebrate small wins and learn from mistakes.

Why Learn the Shuvit?
